Ühiskanalisatsioon refers to a centralized system for the collection and treatment of wastewater. It involves a network of underground pipes, known as sewers, that transport sewage from individual properties to a wastewater treatment plant. The primary purpose of a ühiskanalisatsioon system is to protect public health and the environment by removing pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged back into natural water bodies.

The process typically begins with domestic and industrial wastewater flowing from buildings into the sewer system. This wastewater travels through gravity-fed pipes or is pumped through pressurized mains. Upon reaching the treatment plant, the wastewater undergoes a series of physical, biological, and sometimes chemical processes to remove solids, organic matter, and other contaminants. The treated effluent, which is significantly cleaner, is then safely released. Sludge, the solid byproduct of treatment, is also managed and disposed of or further processed.

Effective ühiskanalisatsioon is crucial for preventing the spread of waterborne diseases and mitigating pollution of rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. Maintaining and upgrading these systems is an ongoing challenge, requiring significant investment to ensure their efficiency and capacity to handle growing populations and stricter environmental regulations.
