Äänihuulet, also known as vocal cords, are two bands of muscle and connective tissue located within the larynx, or voice box, in the throat. When a person speaks, sings, or makes any vocal sound, air from the lungs is expelled upwards through the trachea and into the larynx. This airflow causes the äänihuulet to vibrate. The frequency of these vibrations determines the pitch of the sound produced; faster vibrations result in higher pitches, and slower vibrations produce lower pitches.
