The term waterparken is Dutch for water parks and is used for similar facilities in the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as internationally. They combine slides, pools, and interactive water features with landscaped settings. Most are outdoor parks, but many regions also host indoor waterparken, enabling year-round operation. Common elements include multi-lane or tunnel slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, and splash pads for children, often complemented by food service and seating areas.

The concept grew from the popularity of aquatics and theme parks in the mid-20th century, expanding rapidly from the 1970s onward. Innovations in slide design, water treatment, and safety practices expanded capacity and diversified experiences, and indoor parks developed to counter climate limitations and seasonal demand.

Attractions and design include a range of ride styles, including body slides, tube slides, high-speed or enclosed rides, and raft or family slides. Pool areas may include a simulated wave zone, an expansive lazy river, and shallow zones for young children. Design emphasizes flow management, safety barriers, lifeguard coverage, filtration and chemical control, and accessible facilities.

Parks typically operate seasonally outdoors, with year-round indoor facilities in some regions. Safety protocols cover ride height requirements, supervision by trained staff, water quality monitoring, and emergency procedures. Accessibility, shade, and seating availability are commonly considered in planning.

Waterparken contribute to tourism and local economies, creating jobs and attracting visitors. Environmental considerations include water reuse, energy efficiency, and responsible waste management, with some parks investing in solar heating and advanced filtration.
