They are part of the tonsillar crypt epithelium, which is a specialized type of tissue that lines the crypts. The tonsillar crypts are important for the immune system, as they play a role in the production and maturation of immune cells, particularly T cells. These cells are crucial for the body's defense against infections and diseases.

The tonsillar crypts are also involved in the production of antibodies, which are proteins that help the immune system recognize and neutralize foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. The crypts are located in the posterior part of the tonsils, near the base of the tonsillar pillars. They are typically about 1-2 millimeters in diameter and are surrounded by a layer of lymphoid tissue.

Tonsillgrenarnas are not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen under a microscope.
