Taudinlevinnästä, or disease transmission, refers to the process by which an infectious agent passes from one host to another. This process is fundamental to understanding and controlling the spread of diseases. There are several primary modes of transmission. Direct transmission occurs when a pathogen is transferred from an infected person or animal to a susceptible host through direct contact, such as touching, kissing, or sexual intercourse. Droplet transmission involves the expulsion of large droplets containing pathogens during coughing, sneezing, or talking, which then land on the mucous membranes of a nearby person.

Indirect transmission involves an intermediary. Vehicle-borne transmission occurs when a pathogen is spread through a contaminated inanimate object or substance, like food, water, or fomites (e.g., doorknobs). Vector-borne transmission involves a living organism, typically an insect or arthropod, that carries and transmits a pathogen from one host to another, such as mosquitoes spreading malaria. Airborne transmission involves the spread of smaller droplets or particles that can remain suspended in the air for extended periods and be inhaled by hosts over longer distances. Understanding these modes of transmission is crucial for implementing effective public health measures, including hygiene practices, vaccination, and vector control, to prevent and mitigate outbreaks.
