Suunruokatorvi, also known as the pharynx, is a part of the throat found in vertebrates. It is located behind the mouth and nasal cavity and above the esophagus and larynx. The pharynx serves as a passageway for both air and food, distinguishing it from the esophagus which is solely for food transport and the larynx which is for air.

The pharyngeal structure is typically divided into three main regions. The nasopharynx is the uppermost part, connected to the nasal cavity and extending to the soft palate. It primarily functions in respiration. The oropharynx is the middle section, located behind the oral cavity and extending from the soft palate to the hyoid bone. This region is shared by both the digestive and respiratory systems. The laryngopharynx, also known as the hypopharynx, is the lowest part, extending from the hyoid bone to the esophagus and larynx. It also serves as a pathway for both food and air.

Muscles within the pharynx are responsible for deglutition, or swallowing. During swallowing, the epiglottis, a flap of cartilage, covers the opening of the larynx to prevent food from entering the respiratory tract. The pharynx plays a crucial role in the initial stages of digestion and respiration, facilitating the movement of substances towards their respective destinations. Its complex structure and muscular action are essential for these vital bodily functions.
