The spinothalamic tract, also known as the anterolateral system, is a major sensory pathway in the spinal cord that transmits information about pain, temperature, and crude touch to the brain. It is a crucial component of the somatosensory system, allowing us to perceive potentially harmful stimuli and navigate our environment.

The tract originates from neurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, specifically in laminae I, IV, V, and VI. These neurons receive input from nociceptors (pain receptors) and thermoreceptors (temperature receptors) located in the skin, muscles, and joints. Once activated, these neurons send their axons across the midline of the spinal cord to the contralateral (opposite) side, forming the spinothalamic tract.

As the tract ascends through the spinal cord, brainstem, and pons, it relays sensory information to various nuclei in the thalamus, a relay station in the brain. The thalamus, in turn, projects this information to the somatosensory cortex, where it is consciously perceived as pain, temperature, or crude touch. The spinothalamic tract plays a vital role in protective reflexes, emotional responses to pain, and the overall awareness of our body's state. Damage to this tract can result in a loss of pain and temperature sensation, known as a spinothalamic lesion.
