Silikaattianioniksi refers to an anion of silicic acid. Silicic acids are compounds derived from silicic acid, which has the general formula (SiO2)n(H2O)m. The silicates are a large and diverse class of anionic structures based on the silicon-oxygen tetrahedron, [SiO4]4-. These tetrahedra can link together in various ways, forming simple structures or complex network polymers.

The basic unit of silicates is the orthosilicate ion, [SiO4]4-. However, in most silicate minerals, these tetrahedra are polymerized. Polymerization occurs through the sharing of oxygen atoms between adjacent tetrahedra. For instance, two tetrahedra can share one oxygen atom to form a disilicate ion, [Si2O7]6-. Sharing two oxygen atoms leads to rings, chains, or layers of tetrahedra. The extensive sharing of oxygen atoms can result in a three-dimensional network structure, such as in quartz, where every oxygen atom is shared by two silicon atoms, resulting in the formula SiO2.

The charge of the silicate anion depends on the degree of polymerization and the number of unshared oxygen atoms. For example, in a single chain silicate, the repeating unit is [SiO3]2-. In layered silicates, such as micas, the anion typically has a [Si2O5]2- or [Si4O10]4- composition. The properties of silicate minerals are heavily influenced by the structure of their constituent silicate anions.
