Siirtymäilmiöt (in English, transition phenomena) refer to the physical processes that occur when a substance or system changes from one state or phase to another. These changes are driven by variations in external conditions such as temperature, pressure, or magnetic fields.

The most common and well-understood siirtymäilmiö is the phase transition of matter, such as melting, freezing, boiling, and condensation. During these transitions, a substance absorbs or releases energy (latent heat) while its temperature remains constant until the entire phase change is complete. For example, when ice melts into water at 0 degrees Celsius, heat is absorbed, but the temperature stays at 0 degrees until all the ice has turned into water.

Beyond simple phase changes, siirtymäilmiöt encompass a broader range of phenomena. These can include changes in magnetic states, such as the transition from a ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state at the Curie temperature, or superconducting transitions where a material loses all electrical resistance below a critical temperature. Other examples involve changes in electrical conductivity, such as the transition to a metallic state from an insulating one, or structural rearrangements within a material.
