Risastjörnu is an Icelandic term that translates to "giant star." In astronomy, it refers to a star that has expanded significantly in size during its later stages of evolution. These stars are typically much larger and brighter than main-sequence stars like our Sun.

There are different types of giant stars, distinguished by their temperature and color. Red giants are cooler and appear reddish, while blue giants are hotter and appear bluish. Smaller stars may shed their outer layers to form a planetary nebula and leave behind a white dwarf, while more massive stars can explode as supernovae.
