Produktionkapacitet, or production capacity, is the maximum output a production system can reliably achieve in a defined period given the current resources, processes and constraints. It represents what could be produced under optimal conditions, not necessarily what is actually produced.

Several concepts are used to describe capacity. Design or installed capacity is the theoretical maximum output with all resources fully available. Effective capacity accounts for downtime, maintenance, breaks and other losses. Actual capacity reflects the amount that is realistically produced, considering current operating practices and limitations. Factors influencing capacity include equipment availability and performance, process design and layout, workforce skills and staffing levels, maintenance schedules, supply chain reliability, energy and input costs, and scheduling practices. Bottlenecks or constraints in any part of the system can limit overall capacity, even if other parts have excess capacity.

Capacity planning is the management activity aimed at matching future demand with sufficient capacity. Decisions may involve expanding or reducing capacity, outsourcing, or changing processes. Common strategies include leading, lagging, and matching capacity to expected demand. Short-term decisions focus on scheduling, shift patterns, and inventory, while long-term choices involve capital investment and plant expansion.

In services, capacity often relates to the number of service staff, service times, and queue management. Overall, production capacity is a central metric in operations management, influencing cost, investment decisions and competitive positioning.
