Potentiaalikenttä, or potential field in English, refers to a scalar field where the gradient of the field gives a vector field. In simpler terms, it's a function that assigns a single numerical value (the potential) to every point in space. This value represents the potential energy per unit "charge" or "mass" at that point, or some other relevant quantity depending on the physical context.

The key characteristic of a potential field is that the force or vector field derived from it is conservative. This means that the work done by the force in moving an object between two points is independent of the path taken, and the work done in a closed loop is zero. This property makes potential fields very useful in physics for describing forces like gravity and electrostatic forces.

Mathematically, if $\phi$ is a potential field, then the associated vector field $\mathbf{F}$ can be obtained by taking the negative gradient of $\phi$: $\mathbf{F} = -\nabla \phi$. For example, the gravitational field $\mathbf{g}$ can be derived from the gravitational potential $\Phi$ as $\mathbf{g} = -\nabla \Phi$. Similarly, the electric field $\mathbf{E}$ can be derived from the electric potential $V$ as $\mathbf{E} = -\nabla V$. The concept of potential fields simplifies the analysis of complex force distributions and allows for the application of powerful mathematical tools from calculus.
