Nucleation refers to the initial stage of formation of a new thermodynamic phase. It is the process by which a stable aggregate of atoms or molecules forms from a supersaturated or supercooled solution, a supersaturated vapor, or a liquid metal. This initial aggregate, known as a nucleus, must reach a critical size to grow further. Below this critical size, the nucleus is unstable and tends to dissolve back into the parent phase. Above the critical size, the nucleus becomes stable and can grow.
There are two main types of nucleation: homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous nucleation occurs spontaneously within a
The concept of nucleation is fundamental in many physical processes, including crystallization, precipitation, boiling, and condensation.
