Mykorhizasuhteista, or mycorrhizal associations, describe a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship between fungi and plant roots. These associations are crucial for the survival and growth of the vast majority of terrestrial plants. The fungus colonizes the plant's root system, either externally in an ectomycorrhizal relationship or internally within the root cells in an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) relationship. In return for carbohydrates produced by the plant through photosynthesis, the fungi significantly enhance the plant's ability to absorb water and mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, from the soil. The fungal hyphae, which are much finer than plant root hairs, extend far into the soil, increasing the surface area available for nutrient uptake. Mycorrhizal fungi also play a role in soil structure by binding soil particles together and can improve plant resistance to drought, pathogens, and soil toxins. This intricate partnership is a fundamental component of healthy ecosystems.
