Meristem growth, also known as meristematic growth, refers to the process of plant growth that occurs at specific regions called meristems. These meristems are areas of actively dividing undifferentiated cells. Meristematic tissue is responsible for the continuous formation of new cells, which then differentiate into various plant tissues and organs. There are two main types of meristems: apical meristems and lateral meristems.

Apical meristems are located at the tips of roots and shoots, and they are responsible for primary growth, which increases the length of the plant. This type of growth allows plants to reach for sunlight and nutrients. The root apical meristem is protected by a root cap, while the shoot apical meristem produces leaves and floral buds.

Lateral meristems, on the other hand, are responsible for secondary growth, which increases the girth or diameter of plant organs like stems and roots. The two main lateral meristems are the vascular cambium and the cork cambium. The vascular cambium produces secondary xylem (wood) and secondary phloem, contributing to the plant's structural support and transport of water and nutrients. The cork cambium produces cork, which forms the outer protective layer of woody plants. Meristem growth is a fundamental process that enables plants to grow, develop, and adapt to their environment.
