Kiertokäyrävoimia, also known as centripetal forces, are the forces that are required to keep an object moving in a circular path. Without a centripetal force, an object in motion would continue to travel in a straight line, tangent to its circular path, according to Newton's first law of motion. This force always acts towards the center of the circular path.

The magnitude of the centripetal force depends on the mass of the object, its velocity, and the radius of the circular path. Mathematically, it is expressed by the formula F_c = mv²/r, where F_c is the centripetal force, m is the mass, v is the velocity, and r is the radius. A larger mass or a higher velocity requires a greater centripetal force to maintain the circular motion. Conversely, a larger radius requires less centripetal force for the same mass and velocity.

Examples of centripetal forces are numerous in everyday life and physics. Gravity acts as a centripetal force keeping planets in orbit around the sun. The tension in a string keeps a ball swung in a circle. Friction between tires and the road provides the centripetal force that allows a car to turn a corner. In situations where the centripetal force is absent or insufficient, circular motion cannot be maintained, and the object will deviate from its intended path.
