Humanitaire is a French term used as both an adjective and a noun to describe concerns, practices, and actors involved in alleviating human suffering, especially in emergencies such as armed conflict or natural disasters. The noun usage appears in phrases like l’aide humanitaire (humanitarian aid), l’action humanitaire (humanitarian action), and the field as a whole is known as humanitarianism.

In international contexts, droit humanitaire refers to international humanitarian law (DIH), a body of rules that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict and protect people who are not participating in hostilities. The practical work of humanitaire includes emergency relief, health care, food and water provision, shelter, and protection services. Core principles of humanitarian action—humane treatment of all people, neutrality, impartiality, and independence—guide many organizations.

Actors in the humanitaire field include international bodies, national agencies, and non-governmental organizations, as well as intergovernmental and civil society groups. The sector focuses on rapid response, coordination among aid actors, access for aid delivery, and the transition from relief to recovery and development as conditions permit. Challenges include security risks for staff, bureaucratic hurdles, funding gaps, and the political complexities of operating in conflict zones.
