Hercoaten is a family of protective coatings developed to enhance corrosion resistance, wear protection, and environmental sealing for metal and composite components. The term is used across multiple industries as a generic descriptor rather than a single product.

Most formulations are polymer-based matrices—commonly epoxy or polyurethane systems—augmented with inorganic fillers such as silica or alumina and corrosion inhibitors. They are applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping and cured thermally or with UV light depending on the resin system. Surface preparation typically requires cleaning and priming to ensure adhesion.

Hercoaten coatings form a conformal barrier that reduces moisture and chemical ingress, improves wear resistance, and provides electrical insulation in some variants. Typical dry film thickness ranges from a few micrometers to several tens of micrometers, with performance tailored by formulation.

Industries including automotive, aerospace, electronics, energy, and marine use hercoaten to protect fasteners, housings, engine parts, and electrical components. It is chosen where a lightweight, chemically resistant coating is needed without compromising dimensional tolerances.

Limitations include cost, processing requirements, substrate compatibility, and environmental or health considerations related to solvents or additives. Rework and recoating can be challenging on cured layers.
