Glomerulusában is a term referring to the glomerulus, a key component of the nephron in the kidney. The glomerulus is a network of tiny blood capillaries that filters blood. It is enclosed within Bowman's capsule, also known as the glomerular capsule. This filtration process is the first step in the formation of urine. Blood enters the glomerulus through the afferent arteriole and leaves through the efferent arteriole. The pressure within the glomerular capillaries forces water and small solutes, such as salts, glucose, and amino acids, from the blood into Bowman's capsule, forming the glomerular filtrate. Larger molecules like proteins and blood cells are retained in the blood and do not pass through the filtration membrane. The rate at which blood is filtered by all the glomeruli in both kidneys is called the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This rate is an important indicator of kidney function. Dysfunction of the glomerulus can lead to various kidney diseases.
