The terms phenomenon and noumenon originate from Immanuel Kant's philosophy, particularly his critique of pure reason. A phenomenon refers to an object or event as it appears to our senses and is understood through our cognitive faculties. It is the world as we experience it, structured by our minds. These are the things we can observe, measure, and understand through empirical investigation. Phenomena are the empirical data of our consciousness.

In contrast, a noumenon, or thing-in-itself (Ding an sich), refers to the object or event as it exists independently of our perception and understanding. It is reality as it is, unconditioned by our senses or our mental categories. Kant argued that we can never directly access or know the noumenal realm. Our knowledge is limited to the phenomenal world because our minds actively shape our experience of reality. We impose concepts like space, time, and causality onto the raw data of sensation, thereby constructing the phenomenal world. The noumenal world remains unknowable, a conceptual limit to human knowledge. The distinction between phenomenon and noumenon is central to Kant's transcendental idealism, which posits that while reality exists independently, our knowledge of it is always mediated by the structure of our minds.
