The term is a coined word, where felszín means surface in Hungarian and rl is an arbitrary suffix used to designate a derived surface-level property.

In practice, felszínrl is treated as a dimensionless score ranging from near 0 to 1. It is computed from measurable subcomponents: a roughness index derived from microscopy data, a composition/reactivity index from spectroscopy, and an adsorption-accessibility index from kinetic measurements.
