enterohepattisen
Enterohepatic refers to the enterohepatic circulation, a pathway by which a compound is transported from the liver to the bile, then to the intestine, and finally absorbed back into the liver. This process is particularly important for the recycling of bile acids, which are synthesized in the liver and secreted into the bile to aid in fat digestion in the small intestine. Once in the intestine, a significant portion of these bile acids are reabsorbed through the intestinal wall and transported back to the liver via the portal vein. This enterohepatic circulation of bile acids helps conserve the body's bile acid pool and ensures their efficient reuse.
Beyond bile acids, other substances can also undergo enterohepatic circulation. Certain drugs, for example, are secreted
