einzutreten

Einzutreten is the infinitive form of the German verb eintreten, which means to enter or to join. The term covers both physical entry into a space and the metaphorical entry into a group, organization, or situation. When the infinitive is used with another verb, it is written as einzutreten (with zu in many clauses, for example Es ist geplant, in den Verein einzutreten).

Senses and usage. In a physical sense, eintreten can describe stepping into a room or crossing a threshold: Sie trat in den Flur ein. In a social or organizational sense, it refers to joining a group, club, party, or movement: Er ist dem Verein beigetreten, und er will auch dem Club beitreten. The combination with beitreten is common for membership in organizations, while in den Verein einzutreten or in eine Partei einzutreten is also used.

Grammar notes. The verb eintreten has the past participle eingetreten, used with haben or sein depending on Sense (for example, Die Tür ist eingetreten; Es ist eingetreten, dass...). For joining a group, beitreten is often preferred, with the past participle beigetreten (Ich bin dem Verein beigetreten). The present tense forms include ich trete ein, du trittst ein, er tritt ein, wir treten ein, ihr tretet ein, sie treten ein.
