Deklináciou, sometimes referred to as grammatical case, is a fundamental concept in many languages, particularly in Indo-European languages like Slavic, Germanic, and Baltic families. It describes the inflection of a noun, pronoun, adjective, or numeral to express its grammatical function within a sentence. This function can include relationships such as subject, direct object, indirect object, possession, or location.

Different cases are marked by changes in the word's ending, known as case endings. For example, in Latin, a noun like "rosa" (rose) would change its ending depending on whether it is the subject ("rosa"), the possessor ("rosae"), or the indirect object ("rosae"). The number of cases and the specific functions they denote vary significantly between languages. Some languages have only a few cases, while others, like Finnish, possess a large number.

The purpose of declension is to provide clarity and avoid ambiguity in sentence structure, particularly in languages that do not rely heavily on strict word order. By indicating the role of each word, declension allows for greater flexibility in sentence construction. For languages that have undergone grammatical simplification, such as Modern English, the role of case has largely been taken over by prepositions and word order.
