Crotamiton is a topical antipruritic agent used to relieve itching associated with various skin conditions, most notably scabies and insect bites. It is available as a cream or lotion, and is sold under brand names such as Eurax in many regions. The typical strength in over‑the‑counter products is around 10% crotamiton.

In scabies, crotamiton has been used to reduce pruritus and as a treatment option, but it generally has lower efficacy than first‑line scabicides such as permethrin or ivermectin. It may be considered when standard therapies are contraindicated or unavailable, or to alleviate itching during or after other scabies treatments. Its effect on mite killing is inconsistent, and complete cure rates are lower than with recommended scabicides.

Administration usually involves applying a sufficient amount to cover the body from the neck to the toes, avoiding the face and mucous membranes. The treated skin is left on for about 24 hours and then washed off. A second application after 24 hours is commonly advised for scabies. For localized pruritus, crotamiton may be applied to the affected areas as directed by a healthcare professional.

Adverse effects are generally local and mild, including burning, stinging, redness, or rash at the application site. Rare allergic reactions or contact dermatitis can occur. It should be used with caution on damaged skin, and eyes should be avoided. Safety in pregnancy and lactation is not fully established; treatment should be guided by a clinician if benefits outweigh potential risks. Interactions with other topical agents are not well defined.

Availability and regulation vary by country, but crotamiton remains a widely used adjunct for itching and as a less effective option for scabies when first‑line therapies are unsuitable.
