A comptable, or accountant, is a professional who records and organizes a business’s financial transactions. Comptables also analyze data to support budgeting, ensure compliance with accounting standards, and strengthen internal controls.

In France and many Francophone regions, the title “expert-comptable” designates a regulated professional who can certify accounts, advise on complex issues, and, in many cases, audit or attest financial statements. Becoming an expert-comptable requires specialized education, professional examinations, and registration with a national order. A general comptable may work within a company or a dedicated accounting firm.

Work settings vary: internal comptables in companies or public institutions; independent cabinet comptables offering outsourced services to small and medium enterprises; and large firms with structured accounting teams.
