Call setup refers to the process of establishing a connection between two or more parties for the purpose of communication, typically a voice call. This process is fundamental to telecommunications and involves a series of steps that ensure the call can be initiated, routed, and maintained.

The initial stage of call setup involves the originating party dialing a number or initiating a connection request. This request is then sent to a switching system, such as a telephone exchange. The switching system interprets the dialed number and determines the destination of the call. It then checks if the called party is available and if a connection can be established.

If the called party is available, the switching system allocates resources to create a dedicated path for the call. This path may involve multiple switching centers if the call is long-distance. The system then signals the called party, typically by ringing their phone. Once the called party answers, the connection is fully established, and communication can begin.

During the call setup, various protocols and signaling mechanisms are employed, depending on the type of network, such as Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). These protocols manage aspects like number translation, routing, and the allocation and release of network resources. If the called party is unavailable or the network is congested, the call setup may fail, and the originating party may receive a busy signal or an error message. The call setup process concludes when either party terminates the call, signaling the release of all allocated network resources.
