Biomass processing refers to the conversion of organic materials into energy, fuels, chemicals and materials. It encompasses technologies that transform biomass such as wood residues, agricultural and forestry by-products, dedicated energy crops, and municipal or industrial waste into usable products. The aim is to convert stored solar energy into forms that can be stored, transported, or used across sectors.

The main approaches are thermochemical, biochemical, and physico-chemical. Thermochemical methods include combustion for heat and electricity, gasification to produce synthesis gas, pyrolysis to liquids or vapors, and torrefaction to improve energy density. Biochemical methods include anaerobic digestion to yield biogas, and fermentation or enzymatic processes to produce bioethanol, biodiesel precursors, or other chemicals. Physico-chemical processes combine pretreatment, chemical upgrading and catalytic conversion to generate platform chemicals or fuels from sugars and lignin, often within a biorefinery concept.

End products range from heat and power to transportation fuels, such as bioethanol and biodiesel, and to chemical feedstocks and bioplastics. Integrated biorefineries aim to convert biomass into multiple products in a single system, improving overall efficiency and resource use.

Environmental and economic considerations cover life cycle greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use, feedstock sustainability, and logistics. Policy frameworks, market incentives, and research funding influence deployment and technology maturation, while the climate impact depends on feedstock choice and system design.

Key challenges include feedstock variability, high moisture content, capital costs, and competing uses of biomass. Ongoing research seeks to increase yields, improve conversion efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure sustainable supply chains.
