Betonivärähtelijät, known in English as concrete vibrators, are tools used to consolidate freshly poured concrete. Their primary function is to remove trapped air bubbles and to ensure the concrete fills all parts of the formwork, including around reinforcing steel. This process, called vibration, increases the density and strength of the hardened concrete, leading to a more durable and watertight final product.

There are several types of concrete vibrators. External vibrators are attached to the outside of the formwork, transmitting vibrations through the concrete. Internal vibrators, also known as poker vibrators, are inserted directly into the concrete. These are the most common type and come in various sizes and power sources, including electric, pneumatic, and gasoline-powered models. Screed vibrators are used on the surface of concrete slabs to achieve a smooth finish and consolidation.

The effective use of a concrete vibrator is crucial for achieving optimal concrete quality. Over-vibration can lead to segregation of the concrete mix, where heavier aggregates settle to the bottom and finer materials rise to the top, compromising the structural integrity. Under-vibration, on the other hand, leaves voids and weakens the concrete. Therefore, operators must be trained to apply vibration for the correct duration and in the appropriate locations.
