Betavaihetta, also known as beta decay, is a type of radioactive decay in which a beta particle (an electron or positron) is emitted from an atomic nucleus. This process is fundamental in nuclear physics and plays a crucial role in understanding the stability and transformation of atomic nuclei.

In beta-minus decay, a neutron in the nucleus transforms into a proton, an electron, and an antineutrino. This increases the atomic number of the nucleus by one, effectively turning it into the next element in the periodic table. Conversely, in beta-plus decay, a proton transforms into a neutron, a positron, and a neutrino, decreasing the atomic number by one.

Beta decay is governed by the weak nuclear force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It occurs when the nucleus is in an excited state or when there is an imbalance between the number of protons and neutrons, leading to instability.
