The first documented reference to Attendes dates back to the 12th century, when it appeared in feudal land records as a modest holding under the authority of the local seignior. The name is believed to derive from the Latin term “attendus,” which means “delayed” or “awaited,” possibly alluding to its historical role as a resting point for travelers along a regional route. Over the centuries, the commune developed primarily as an agrarian community, cultivating cereals, root vegetables, and raising livestock.

During the French Revolution, Attendes was incorporated into the new administrative structure, retaining its status as a commune within the newly established department. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the village’s population fluctuated, reflecting broader rural demographic trends in France; many residents migrated to urban centers for industrial employment, while some remained to maintain the local agricultural economy. Today, Attendes maintains a small, close-knit population and features a 17th‑century church that serves as a focal point for community life.
