Arpeggiovoering refers to the practice of playing the notes of a chord in succession rather than sounding them simultaneously. The term is used in Dutch to describe the execution of arpeggios across different instruments and in instructional contexts. It encompasses various ways of spreading a chord, from a quick roll to longer, deliberate arpeggiated figures.

Notatie en uitvoering: In written music an arpeggio is often indicated by a vertical wavy line before a chord, sometimes with direction arrows to show ascending or descending order. In keyboard music the arpeggio is usually realized by rolling the chord with one or both hands, often aided by pedal to sustain tones. On guitar arpeggiation refers to plucking or picking the strings in a sequence to realize the chord tones, frequently in patterns that outline the chord’s structure. String players may use specific bowing to articulate arpeggios, giving a smooth or detached effect depending on the context.

Functie en pedagogiek: Arpeggiovoering adds musical motion, textuur en verbindingslijnen tussen harmonische areas. Het wordt gebruikt als accompany-figuur in klassieke pianomuziek, orkestrale verdichtingen, Jazz-voering en gitaarbegeleiding, maar ook als melodische verkorting van een akkoord. Studenten oefenen arpeggio-patronen over toonsoorten, eerst met triads en zevende akkoorden, vervolgens met inversies en uitgebreide klanken, met aandacht voor legato, articulatie en tempo.

Historisch overzicht: Arpeggio-figuren komen vroeg voor in keyboard- en continuo-parts van de Barok en de Klassieke periode en zijn sindsdien een fundament in vele muziekstijlen gebleven. In de romantiek en in hedendaagse genres blijft arpeggiovoering een belangrijke techniek om klankkleur, spanning en harmonische helderheid te sturen.
