Anti-GBM antibodies are autoantibodies that target the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). The GBM is a critical component of the kidney's filtering units, called glomeruli. When these antibodies are present, they can trigger an inflammatory response in the kidneys, leading to a condition known as anti-GBM disease, also referred to as Goodpasture's syndrome.

Anti-GBM disease is a rare autoimmune disorder. The immune system mistakenly identifies the GBM as foreign and attacks it. This attack causes damage to the glomeruli, impairing the kidneys' ability to filter waste products from the blood. In addition to kidney damage, anti-GBM antibodies can also target the basement membranes in the lungs, leading to pulmonary hemorrhage, characterized by coughing up blood.

The presence of anti-GBM antibodies is typically diagnosed through blood tests that detect these specific autoantibodies. Kidney biopsy may also be performed to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of damage. Treatment focuses on removing the antibodies from the blood, suppressing the immune system to prevent further damage, and managing kidney function. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preserve kidney function and prevent severe complications.
