Angle modulation is a technique used in telecommunications to encode information onto a carrier wave by varying its phase or frequency. This is distinct from amplitude modulation, where the amplitude of the carrier wave is changed. In angle modulation, the amplitude of the carrier wave remains constant. The information is encoded in the variations of the angle of the carrier wave's sinusoidal waveform.

There are two main types of angle modulation: frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM). In FM, the instantaneous frequency of the carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. The greater the amplitude of the information signal, the further the carrier frequency deviates from its unmodulated center frequency. In PM, the instantaneous phase of the carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. While related, FM and PM are not identical; a change in frequency implies a change in phase, and vice versa.

Angle modulation offers advantages such as improved noise immunity compared to amplitude modulation, leading to higher fidelity in applications like FM radio broadcasting. The constant amplitude also makes it more robust against amplitude-dependent distortions. However, angle modulated signals typically require a wider bandwidth than amplitude modulated signals for transmission.
