Analogë refers to a system or signal that is continuous and varies smoothly over time. Unlike digital systems, which represent information in discrete steps or values, analog systems represent data as a continuous physical quantity. Examples of analog signals include the voltage from a microphone capturing sound waves, the temperature measured by a thermometer, or the speed of a car. The value of an analog signal is directly proportional to the phenomenon it represents.

The characteristic feature of analog systems is their inherent ability to capture subtle variations and nuances that might be lost in digital representations. For instance, an analog recording of music can reproduce a wider range of frequencies and dynamic variations compared to early digital formats. However, analog signals are also susceptible to noise and degradation, which can accumulate over time or during transmission, potentially altering the original information.

Historically, many technologies relied on analog principles. This includes early forms of sound recording and playback (like vinyl records and cassette tapes), analog televisions and radios, and older measuring instruments. While digital technology has become dominant in many fields due to its precision, ease of manipulation, and resistance to noise, analog systems continue to be relevant in specific applications where continuous representation is advantageous or where existing infrastructure is analog-based. The transition from analog to digital, known as digitization, involves sampling an analog signal at regular intervals and quantizing these samples into discrete numerical values.
