The coating typically contains dairy-derived ingredients such as yogurt powder, dried yogurt, whey protein concentrate, or casein, combined with sweeteners, fats or oils, starches, and emulsifiers. The mixture is applied to the exterior of the base product—often nuts, fruit pieces, pretzels, or granola clusters—and then dried or set to form a firm, often glossy surface. Some coatings rely on yogurt flavor compounds rather than actual yogurt, creating a yogurt-like taste without significant dairy content.

Common applications include yogurt-coated almonds, yogurt-covered pretzels, yogurt-coated raisins, and yogurt-coated cranberries, as well as snack bars or bite-sized confections. The texture is typically crisp or lightly crunchy, with a tangy, mildly sweet yogurt flavor that varies with the proportion of dairy ingredients and sweeteners used.

Nutrition and labeling vary by product and jurisdiction. Dairy-based yogurts add protein and calcium but also lactose and fat, while added sugars and calories can be substantial in coated snacks. Yogurtcoated products may not be suitable for dairy-free, vegan, or lactose-intolerant individuals, and cross-contamination with other allergens can occur in manufacturing facilities.
