Vorfahren

Vorfahren is a German verb meaning to drive in front of another vehicle. The term describes a driving maneuver in which a driver moves into the space ahead of another vehicle, typically by changing lanes or accelerating to position the car ahead and continue driving there.

In everyday usage, Vorfahren is often discussed in the context of traffic safety and driving etiquette. It is distinct from and related to other terms such as Überholen (overtaking) and Vorfahrt (right of way). Whereas Überholen generally refers to passing a vehicle from behind, Vorfahren emphasizes the act of occupying the position ahead of another vehicle, which can impact the other road users’ ability to maneuver.

A Vorfahren that endangers others, disrupts traffic flow, or violates right‑of‑way rules is typically viewed as unsafe driving and may be punishable under national traffic laws.
