TideBoat

TideBoat refers to a family of compact tidal-powered boats developed for nearshore transport and recreation. Designed and manufactured by TideTech Systems, TideBoats integrate electric propulsion with tidal current assistance to enable efficient operation in near-coastal waters.

The hull is a shallow-draft, modular planform optimized for small ports and estuaries. Propulsion combines a battery-electric drive motor with a hydrokinetic module or current-assisted fin that can engage when tidal streams are favorable. Energy management relies on onboard batteries, with supplementary solar charging during daylight and dockside charging options. The vessel includes navigation software that accounts for tide predictions and current vectors, improving energy efficiency and routing. Safety systems include automated collision avoidance, bilge monitoring, and standardized mooring gear.

TideBoats are intended for short-range transport, water-taxi services, and recreational trips in tidal zones. The design emphasizes ease of mooring at variable tide levels and stable performance in moderate currents. Endurance depends on load, tide, and mode of operation.

Announced in 2022 by TideTech Systems, with field tests conducted at several coastal ports in 2023–2024. Regulatory approvals and certification processes were in progress as of 2024.

The concept targets coastal communities and tour operators seeking low-emission transport. Proponents highlight reduced emissions and quiet operation; critics mention higher upfront costs, maintenance of hybrid propulsion, and considerations about ecological impacts in sensitive tidal habitats.
