Tamenglong

Tamenglong is a district in the Manipur state of northeastern India. The town of Tamenglong serves as the district headquarters. The district lies in the northern part of the state and is part of the Manipur Hills, featuring a largely hilly and forested landscape.

The district is inhabited mainly by indigenous hill tribes, including Zeliangrong groups such as Zeme, Liangmai and Rongmei, along with other hill communities. Local languages include Zeme, Liangmai, Rongmei, and Meitei; English is used in education and administration. The area has rich traditional music, dance and festivals, reflecting its tribal heritage.

Agriculture is the main economic activity. Farmers grow rice, maize and vegetables, and the district has significant horticulture and fruit cultivation and some forestry-based livelihoods. Handicrafts are produced by various communities.

Tamenglong district is connected mainly by road to Imphal and other towns; air and rail links are located in the state capital Imphal, with the nearest airport there.

The district comprises several administrative blocks and numerous villages organized under local governance. The area has forested hills, valleys and streams, and is known for its natural beauty, with potential for eco-tourism, including village tourism and trekking in surrounding highland areas.
