Táplálékhálók (food webs) are complex interconnected systems that describe the feeding relationships between organisms within an ecosystem. Unlike a simple food chain, which illustrates a single linear pathway of energy transfer, a food web depicts the many different paths energy can take. These webs are crucial for understanding the stability and health of an ecosystem.

At the base of most food webs are producers, typically photosynthetic organisms like plants and algae, which convert sunlight into energy. Primary consumers, also known as herbivores, feed directly on producers. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, prey on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers occupy higher trophic levels, feeding on secondary consumers, and so on. Omnivores can occupy multiple trophic levels simultaneously as they consume both plants and animals.

The arrows in a food web diagram indicate the direction of energy flow, pointing from the organism being eaten to the organism that eats it. The removal or significant decline of any organism within a food web can have cascading effects, impacting other populations and potentially destabilizing the entire ecosystem. Conversely, the interconnectedness also provides resilience, as organisms may have multiple food sources, allowing them to adapt to changes in the availability of a single prey species. Studying food webs is essential for ecological research, conservation efforts, and understanding the intricate balance of nature.
