Suske
Suske is a fictional character in the Belgian comic series Suske en Wiske (Spike and Suzy in English). Created by Willy Vandersteen, the series began in the mid-1940s and became one of the best-known Flemish comic strips. Suske is a resourceful, curious boy who, together with his friend Wiske and their companions, travels to different times and places. The stories blend humor, fantasy, and adventure and often incorporate historical events, myths, and science fiction elements. The recurring cast typically includes Lambik, a jovial but clumsy older friend; Jerom, a physically strong but well-meaning ally; and Professor Barabas, a brilliant inventor who provides gadgets for adventures. Over the decades, Suske en Wiske has been published in numerous albums, translated into many languages, and adapted into animated series, radio plays, and films. After Vandersteen’s death in 1990, the series continued under his studio and subsequent publishers, preserving its distinctive style while introducing new authors and storylines. The character has had a lasting influence on Belgian and Dutch-language comics and remains a durable element of Flemish popular culture.
