Structuresand

Structuresand is a term used in civil engineering to describe an engineered sand product designed for structural applications. It is produced to meet specified particle size distribution, cleanliness, and moisture characteristics to achieve predictable compaction and bearing performance when used as fill, base, or interlayer in contact with foundations.

It typically consists of high-quality quartz sand with limited fines (silt and clay) to reduce cohesion and improve drainage and compaction. The grain size distribution is tailored to produce a densely packed, low-void matrix; common ranges emphasize a well-graded mix with a maximum particle size in the millimeter range and low fine content to maintain stability in dry and semi-dry conditions. The material is usually washed and dried to remove contaminants.

Structuresand is produced from crushed rock or natural sands that are processed to meet regional standards for construction aggregates. Depending on jurisdiction, the material must comply with standards such as ASTM or EN specifications for sand and gravel used in structural applications. Quality control typically includes particle size analysis, washing, moisture content testing, and field compaction checks.

Typical uses include compacted fill under concrete slabs, base layers for roadways and foundations, backfill behind retaining walls, and as a clean interlayer in modular or prefabricated construction. Advantages include predictable compaction behavior, improved bearing capacity, and better drainage. Limitations include higher cost relative to common bank sands, ongoing dust-control needs due to silica content, and potential supply constraints in some regions.
