Sobresaliente

Sobresaliente is a Spanish adjective meaning outstanding, exceptional, or remarkable. It is formed from sobre, meaning above, and saliente, meaning prominent, and is used to describe things that stand out for their quality or performance. In everyday language it can refer to people, work, or objects that exceed normal expectations.

In educational contexts, sobresaliente is a formal grade in several Spanish-speaking systems. Although scales differ by country and institution, it generally marks the highest category on a 0–10 scale, commonly corresponding to scores near the top of the range (typically around 9 to 10). It is positioned above notable and aprobado. Some schools distinguish a higher honor such as matrícula de honor or similar distinctions for truly exceptional work, which may accompany or supersede the plain sobresaliente.

Outside grading, the term remains common to indicate excellence. A performance, project, or product described as sobresaliente is considered to stand out for its quality, effectiveness, or innovation. The exact degree of emphasis can vary by context, but the word usually conveys stronger emphasis than excelente or notable.

Regional usage varies; in many Latin American countries, the term operates within similar qualitative scales, while in others the terminology and grading practices differ. Regardless of jurisdiction, sobresaliente consistently denotes high merit and distinction.
