Schulverweis

Schulverweis is a formal disciplinary measure used by schools to exclude a student from attending classes for a defined period or, in the most serious cases, from the school entirely. It is one of the more serious sanctions in the range of school discipline and is governed by state education laws and school regulations. It is distinct from milder measures such as verbal warnings, written reprimands, or a temporary Hausverweis from the school premises.

Grounds for a Schulverweis are typically serious or repeated violations of school rules that endanger the learning environment or safety, such as violence, theft, severe disruptions, truancy, or violations of the school's discipline policy. Depending on the jurisdiction, a Schulverweis may be temporary or permanent and must specify duration and conditions.

Procedure: The decision is usually taken by school leadership after consultation with teachers and, where appropriate, with the parents or guardians. The student and parents receive a written notice with the reasons, duration, and information about rights of appeal to a higher authority, such as a school board or education authority. A hearing may be offered.

Consequences and rights: A Schulverweis limits or ends attendance at the current school and may trigger referral to another school or an alternative educational provision. However, the obligation to provide schooling generally remains, and the local education authority may require follow-up steps or assessments if applicable.
