Satellitedelivered refers to the delivery of data, media, or services via satellite communications rather than traditional terrestrial networks. It covers content distribution, broadband connectivity, and other data transmissions that reach end users through satellite links.

In practice, satellitedelivered services typically involve uplinking from a ground facility to a satellite, the satellite’s transponder relay, and downlink to user terminals or gateways. Technologies commonly used include DVB-S and DVB-S2 for broadcast and broadband, along with associated modulation and coding schemes and IP-over-satellite protocols. Recent developments in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have reduced latency and increased capacity, expanding consumer broadband and mobile backhaul capabilities.

Applications span a wide range of needs. Satellite-delivered services support television and radio distribution, broadband access for rural or maritime environments, in-flight and in-vehicle connectivity, disaster-response communications, and government or military networks. They also enable backhaul for cellular networks in areas lacking fiber or microwave links and can underpin content delivery networks that distribute large media files to regional endpoints.

Advantages include broad geographic coverage, efficient multicast for large audiences, and resilience in situations where terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or unavailable. Limitations involve higher latency for geostationary systems, higher equipment and service costs, weather sensitivity, regulatory and spectrum considerations, and ongoing concerns about space debris and orbital management.
