Satelliitvõrkudes, meaning satellite networks in Estonian, refers to a system of interconnected satellites used for communication purposes. These networks allow for the transmission of data, voice, and video signals across vast geographical areas, including remote regions where terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or impractical.

The fundamental principle of satellite networks involves ground stations transmitting signals to satellites orbiting Earth. These satellites then relay the signals to other ground stations or directly to user terminals. Different types of satellite orbits, such as geostationary (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and low Earth orbit (LEO), are utilized depending on the application's requirements for coverage, latency, and bandwidth.

GEO satellites are positioned in a fixed orbit above the equator, providing continuous coverage over a specific region. MEO satellites offer a balance between coverage and latency, while LEO satellites orbit closer to Earth, resulting in lower latency but requiring a larger constellation to ensure continuous service.

Applications of satellite networks are diverse, ranging from global internet access and broadcasting to telecommunications for ships and aircraft, remote sensing, navigation systems like GPS, and military communications. The development of satellite network technology continues to enhance speed, capacity, and reliability, playing an increasingly crucial role in global connectivity.
