SMCRmodell

The SMCR model, also known as the Source-Message-Channel-Receiver model, is a communication framework proposed by David Berlo. It describes the fundamental elements involved in the process of communication. The model breaks down communication into four key components.

The first component is the Source, which is the origin of the communication. This encompasses the sender's communication skills, attitudes, knowledge level, social system, and culture. The second component is the Message, which is the information being conveyed. This includes the content of the message, its treatment, the statement of the message, its structure, and its code, such as language or non-verbal cues.

The third component is the Channel, which is the medium through which the message travels from the source to the receiver. Examples of channels include sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. The effectiveness of the channel can depend on the sensory abilities of both the source and the receiver.

Finally, the Receiver is the intended recipient of the message. Similar to the source, the receiver's communication skills, attitudes, knowledge level, social system, and culture significantly influence how the message is interpreted. The SMCR model emphasizes that the success of communication relies on the congruence and effectiveness of all these elements. Misunderstandings can arise if there are significant differences or weaknesses in any of the four components.
