Resource assessment distinguishes reserves—the known recoverable quantities with current technology and economic conditions—from broader resources, which may become accessible with advances. The concept of energy return on investment (EROI), life-cycle analysis, and techno-economic assessment help compare resources and guide investment. Costs, subsidies, and policy shape the pace of resource development.

Environmental and social considerations are central, including greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land impact, air quality, and community effects. Energy security and resilience, diversification of supply, and fair access to energy are common policy objectives. The transition to lower-carbon resources is influenced by technology, governance, and market signals.

Global trends include rising demand in emerging economies, decarbonization, and increasing emphasis on efficiency and storage. Challenges involve data uncertainty, geopolitical risk, stranded assets, and balancing development needs with environmental limits. International bodies such as the IEA and national agencies monitor resources and publish outlooks.
