Produktsicherheit, or product safety, refers to the set of laws, standards, and procedures designed to ensure that consumer products can be used safely. It covers hazards arising from design, production, labeling, packaging, and instructions for use, and seeks to prevent harm to health and property while providing clear information for consumers.

At the European level, product safety is governed by the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) and related regulations, with market surveillance carried out under Regulation (EU) 2019/1020. For many products, conformity with safety requirements is evidenced by the CE marking and a Declaration of Conformity. National authorities supplement EU rules through market surveillance and enforcement actions.

In Germany, the Produktsicherheitsgesetz (ProdSG) implements EU directives on product safety. Manufacturers bear primary responsibility for ensuring safety, performing risk assessments, maintaining technical documentation, and issuing safety notices. Importers must verify that products meet requirements, and distributors must act if a product is unsafe, including stopping sales and cooperating with authorities.

During the post-market phase, authorities monitor products, issue recalls or safety notices, and require corrective actions. When a safety issue is found, manufacturers may offer repairs, replacements, or refunds. Comprehensive documentation, proper labeling, and clear instructions are essential components of compliance and traceability.

Coverage includes a broad range of consumer goods, from toys and electronics to household items. Some categories have sector-specific rules that add or modify safety requirements. The overarching aim is to enable safe choice, timely information, and accountability across the product life cycle in a globalized market.
