Politiker

Politiker is a person who participates in politics, typically by seeking or holding public office and shaping public policy. In German-speaking contexts, the term is gendered (Politiker for males or generic, Politikerin for females); in broader usage it corresponds to the English 'politician'.

Politicians have roles and functions such as legislating or influencing legislation, setting budgets, supervising the executive branch, representing the interests of constituents, and communicating policy positions to the public. They negotiate with other political actors and may serve in legislatures, governments, or local councils, holding roles such as ministers, members of parliament, or city councilors. Their power varies by system and level of government.

In many democracies, politicians are elected through competitive elections or selected by political parties for public office. Career paths are diverse; many begin in local government, party work, or public service, and move to higher offices. Common professional backgrounds include law, business, journalism, or academia.

Politicians are subject to elections, legal constraints, and ethical codes. Campaign finance rules, transparency requirements, and anti-corruption measures aim to limit conflicts of interest and undue influence. Performance is assessed by constituents, the media, oversight institutions, and opposition parties.

They operate in complex, often polarized environments. They balance party platforms, public opinion, interest groups, and administrative feasibility, while facing scrutiny over decisions, lobbying, and fundraising.
